A Compass for What Matters: Applying Virtue Ethics to Information Behavior

Abstract Out of the three major approaches to ethics, virtue ethics is uniquely well suited as a moral guide in digital age, given pace sociotechnical change and complexity society. Virtue focuses on traits, situations actions agents, rather than rules (as deontology) or outcomes (consequentialism). Even interest has grown within information behavior (IB), there been little engagement with ethics. To address this lacuna demonstrate further research opportunities, article provides an overview for application IB (broadly defined). It primer gives examples existing work that compatible suggests avenues virtue-oriented IB.
